Religion Has No Place in Public Schools Essay - 1020 Words

The constitution is a set of laws set by the government to protect the nation’s rights. One of those rights is the First Amendment which discusses the prohibition of an established religion and allows the free exercise of religion. Thomas Jefferson had written a letter discussing the separation of church and state, which has resulted in many debates over the limitations of religion in the public schools (Hamburger). There is research that supports both the arguments that students can benefit academically from the influence of religion and from keeping religious teachings separate from public schools. Early in Americas history, when it first became a country, public schools were administrated by Protestants. In addition, that religion strengthens values that contribute to academic excellence (King 197-204). Some of those principles that may be reinforced by religion are integrity, good work ethic, discipline, respect for others, self-esteem, and being involved. There is also research giving evidence that religious morals would lead to a decrease in school shootings, drug and alcohol abuse, and teen pregnancy, issues that students struggle with and are common today (Marzilli). It is believed that teachers should do more than nurture academically; they must also build character. Furthermore, it is believed religious teachings in the public schools would increase the amount of learning that occurs outside of the classroom because a part of religious practices includes educational activities, including reading and analyzing the Bible and other resources. These activities train and motivate students to explore, memorize, examine, and reflect on religious and nonreligious texts (Irvine). Personal accountability and identity formation are also crucial and are supported through spiritual practices. Students who take part in religious practices are encouraged to do well; not only by their own determination, but also by their connection to others who expect it (King 197-204). I have indentified a need that there is nominally a high rising â€Å"accident† rate which involves forklift trucks, with injuries and fatalities occurring to other workers and members of public who are in the area of the forklift truck whilst in use. I have chosen to design a product that could be fitted, to a forklift truck, which will improve safety and reduce â€Å"accidents† whilst a forklift truck is in use. The majority of these accidents are caused by the lack of sufficient training of the operator, operator error, a lack of knowledge about the equipment and the working environment, bad truck maintenance, poor lighting conditions, inadequate gangways and unsuitable premises in which forklift trucks are used. All of these problems/potential incidents can be prevented by carrying out the correct procedures and using efficient products and accessories to do so†¦ for example an add on product/accessories that is built and engineered to these exact demands! Outline Specification An outline specification specialises in exact specifications during the early stages of a design process, this being the designing of an accessory to improve the safety whilst forklifts trucks are being used. The specification is to include the need of the particular product, which can then be quantified, by converting each demand into a specific broken down form. Functionality. The functionality would be to try and improve the driver’s visibility, increase safety awareness for pedestrians. User interaction. User Interaction would be visual for example – VDU Monitors so the forklift truck driver can closely examine what is going on with the truck in blind spot areas. Alarms sensors could be also fitted so as these sound the operator will interact up on hearing these alarms and respond efficiently knowing that something or someone is potentially at risk Physical Form. The physical form of the product should improve the forklifts lifting capabilities and working in tight spaces. Robustness Operating Environment. The product will have to be robust I,E it is going to be used in different climates, both hot, cold, wet and dusty. If electrical or electronic components are to be used these should be waterproofed in some kind of way, designing a casing that can with stand these conditions could do this. It would need to be made out of a heavy duty material due to the kind of environment being used in, to do this you could design the casing out of a heavy duty plastic or some kind of metal. Signals. Signals of the particular unit or accessory dependant on whether it is electrical/electronic based, it should be ensured that fast response times between display alarm units are as close to real time as possible. Having Latency type effects will delay the operators response therefore could have already caused an â€Å"accident† Power Supply. Depending on the type of unit a separate battery source (12VDC) could be used, charging the unit off of the existing battery package, it would charge the unit whilst in use. However this may not be very efficient, with solar powered technology becoming more and more common, a little solar panel could be fitted therefore creating its own power supply and charging its own battery source. Safety. The final product designed would need to reach the EU standards and be CE certified, it would need to be proven that the product is safe, and is capable of carrying out the specified task Product Failure. If the product were to fail, it would have to be self-notifying i.e. and integrated alarm with in the unit to notify the operator that it is not working. If the product was to fail and not give any notification of doing so then the operator would still be relying on a piece of accident prevention equipment which could in fact cause an â€Å"accident† Maintenance. The Product should be easy to maintain, be located in a place where it is to do so, maintaining the product would mean checking that the product is working correctly and the connections are all in order. However the product will be designed to last in excess of 5 years under normal operating conditions before it should be due a â€Å"service† Costs. The Estimated development cost of producing this extraordinary accessory would be: à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½50k+ with the forklift truck product retailing at around: à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½350 with a DIY fitting package. However an installation and service/maintenance contract could be agreed resulting in extra income. Schedules. The schedule from designing the specified product to developing it would be roughly around 6 – 12 months. Development schedule would depend on Function Solution Matrix: Function Solution Principle Driver Visibility Cameras – Improving the view of driver, integrated VDU unit 1 Mirrors – Improve the drivers view 2 Maneuverability 5 Second reverse delay – Giving the driver a good chance to look round 2 Restricted speeds for built up area – Reducing the risk of accidents/crashes1 Pedestrian Visibility High-Visibility color’s – Another way of enforcing the forklift trucks visibility 1 High intensity lights Alarms – making people aware of the use of a forklift truck 2 Cordoned off areas/hot spots – reduces the risk of accidents to humans Object sensors Laser Sensors – limit speed of forklift truck depending on how close an object is to the truck, alerting driver Infra Red sensors – limit speed of forklift truck depending on how close an object is to the truck, alerting driver Solution one is rather complex when compared to solution two because it contains more electronic components This means that it may be of a higher potential to fail as there is more that could go wrong. However it would ensure that forklifts trucks that would be lifting more abnormal heavy loads the operator would be easily informed In comparison to solution one, the second solution is much more simple approach to satisfying the specification set. With this would bring better reliability however the product wouldn’t be original. The use standardized alarms and hazard lights should be set as a standard, the more complex clever device is the 5-second reverse delay unit. This would delay the operation from putting the forklift truck into reverse giving the operator enough time to check and look around, investigating at this point in time the best route to take and look for instructions The unit would be an all in one manufactured unit in 1 part except the hazard lights. I have chosen to design and build a 5 second reverse power delay (Solution 2) with alarms to indicate a forklift truck is in presence. The 5-second delay gives the operator plenty of opportunity to look around to plan the route to be taken, and there are no objects/people in the way. Sonnet Essays - Rhyme, Sonnet, Shakespeares Sonnets,

Sonnet The sonnets, 130 and 292, written by William Shakespeare and Francesco Petrarch, both shows their passionate love towards their woman and it is very interesting to compare and contrast the two. Although their passionate mind was similar, they differ in form, tone, and meaning. First of all, the form differs. The Sonnet 130 is written in Shakespearean (English) format, which has the rhyme scheme of a-b-a-b-c-d-c-d-e-f-e-f-g-g. It has three quatrains, four-line stanzas, and ends with a couplet, a two-line stanza. Unlike Sonnet 130, Sonnet 292 follows the Italian (Petrarchan) form. This has a different rhyme scheme that goes a-b-b-a-a-b-b-a-c-d-d-e-e, and it has an octave, the first eight lines which tells the story, and the sestet, the last six lines which the speaker comments on the situation. Although they differ in style, they both follow the iambic pentameter. Secondly, the two sonnets differ in tone. Sonnet 292, like many other sonnets, it idealizes the woman by using words such as the waving hair of unmixed gold that shone, the smile that flashed with the angelic rays that used to make this earth a paradise. (Lines 5-8) These words give the sonnet a very beautiful and heavenly tone. In contrast, William Shakespeare ridicules the physical appearance of his mistress by using words such as if hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head, I have seen roses damaskd, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks. (Lines 4-7) Although these words doesnt give a beautiful and heavenly tone, it sets the sonnet up for the meaning. The two sonnets differ in meaning greatly. The Sonnet 130, later gives out the meaning when the author says I love to hear her speak (line 9). He is stating that he loves her uniqueness, and for whom she is, not for her physical appearance. The author also gives a little moral lesson to the readers that people shouldnt love based on looks but for what they really are. In contrast, in Sonnet 292, the author grieves for the loss of his love. His sorrow feelings are well shown in the lines the vein of my accustomed art is dry, and this, my lyre, turned at last to tears. (Lines 13-14) He is saying that his art was motivated by the woman he loved but his desire and passion for art has run out due to the loss. It is clearly shown that the two sonnets differ greatly in form, tone, and meaning. I believe that this is due to the different time and society the authors lived in. But these two sonnets show that no matter the time and society, ones love towards another has always been passionate through out history.

For instance, during the war that saw the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, many Iraqis who were non-combatants were killed. Complete List of IB Schools in the USA, by State SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips As a former IB student, I highly recommend the IB Diploma Programme. I think I was far better prepared for college than my non-IB counterparts. I had been prepared to think critically and globally. If you are a parent or student interested in enrolling in an IB Diploma Programme, this article is for you. I've compiled a list of all the IB Diploma Programme Schools in the United States and arranged them by State. I have also provided several of the school’s Diploma Rate. The Diploma Rate is determined by the percentage of the students who receive IB diplomas out of those who were diploma candidates. Not all students who pursue an IB Diploma will receive the degree; you must complete certain qualification (achieve certain test scores and complete certain projects to a satisfactory level). How to Use This Information First and foremost, you should use this information to locate the IB Diploma Programme School nearest you. If you are lucky enough to have a couple of IB Diploma Programme Schools in your area or if you are simply trying to decide between an IB and non-IB schools, then you should compare the two using a couple of data points. What Questions Should I Ask When Comparing IB Schools or an IB and Non-IB School? If you are comparing two or more IB Diploma Programme Schools (or an IB School with a non-IB School), I recommend emailing the IB coordinator at each school (you can contact them through the school’s hyperlink below) and asking for: The school’s IB Diploma Rate (mentioned above, but again, this is the number of students who received IB Diploma out of all of the IB Diploma candidates at that school) However, this should not be the be all end all. According to one IB coordinator, â€Å"IB allows schools to not count some students’ scores, so the school will not drop the student in order to help their percentage.† So, the rate may not be reflective of the whole school’s performance. What is the admission criteria for their IB Programme (usually it differs from the High School’s overall admission criteria) The overall graduation rate How many graduates are headed to 4-year schools You should also look at how long they have been an IB School (the older school’s tend to have better teachers and Diploma Rates) You can find this information on the IBO school page (simply click the hyperlinked school name and you are there). If you are comparing an IB School to a non-IB School, email someone in the administration at the non-IB School and ask for: the overall graduation rate how many graduates are headed to 4-year schools the admissions criteria The answer to these questions are important, and if the IB coordinator/administrator is not willing to answer them, you should be wary of the school (Most likely, it means they are performing poorly in one or all of these categories). I am going to do a sample comparison between Pedro Menendez High School in St. Augustine, FL, and St. Petersburg School in St. Petersburg, FL, using the information I have: IB Diploma Rate, how long they have been an IB School, and IB Programme Admission Criteria. Based on the information given, if my child or I met the qualifications for St. Petersburg High School, I would choose to attend their program given the fact that their IB programme is over 30 years old, and the IB Diploma Rate is so high. The school clearly knows the IB Programme well, and you or your child is much more likely to receive their IB Diploma if they attend this school. Influence of Employee Voice on Pay Determination - Coursework Example Marsden(2007,p1) makes use of the concept of a ‘zone of acceptance’ as the core of his article ,in which, to put it in a nutshell, he suggests that employers need to periodically revise the roles and preferences of themselves and of employees as a necessary prerequisite for the process of adaptation through integrative bargaining, which deals with reaching in agreements to increase the size of the pie. The article discusses the ways in which collective employee voice can enable individual level integrative negotiations in the jurisdiction of non-codified elements of employment conditions that he calls ‘psychological contracts’, quoting Denise Rousseau(1995). The ‘zone of acceptance’ decides the range of tasks that employees are prepared to perform and their time periods. However, to keep up with changing production and market requirements, organizations need to revise the boundaries of this zone periodically, with employee consent, if the organi zation has to survive. This is accomplished by communication with the employees and revising their beliefs and expectations contained in the ‘psychological contract’. The relationship of employment contains both psychological and economic constituents. According to the mutual interests of the parties involved, its contractual form is chosen from among a range of alternative ways of organizing transactions. Its economic basis defines the individual voice as well as collective employee voice which form the basis for renegotiating and inducing changes in the boundaries of the ‘zone of acceptance’. Marsden(2007,p1) cites Ram et al(2001) to suggest that a negotiated order of varying degrees governs the workplace. Performance management in the British public sector and private sector organisations combines employee goal-setting and appraisal to performance related determination of pay. Marsden (2007) seeks to extend the range of voice mechanisms employers choose and tries to find out the reasons as to why employers choose a particular voice mechanism over others by  analyzing the individual-level renegotiation of the zone of acceptance as a form of integrative bargaining, whose quality decides its outcome.  Ã‚
